International Celebration of Girl Power

I was lucky enough to grow up not knowing about things that ‘girls can’t do’ or that ‘aren’t for girls’.
While I did play with my barbie house, my sister had a sweet collection of remote control cars.

When I got my driving licence, one of the first things my dad did, was give me a key for locking wheel nuts and a car jack. He left me in the garage and asked to come get him when I’m done changing all the wheels.

When I decided to get my motorcycle driving licence, he took his old bike out of the garage and said that if I bring it back to life, I can have it.

I was never told off for wanting to do things that apparently are not so feminine as perceived by society. I was taught to be independent and it had absolutely nothing to do with my gender.
I’m still not sure whether it’s a bliss or a curse.

Later in my life I had to learn that the real world doesn’t work exactly how I thought. I’ve been told not to do things, because ‘I’m a woman’, not to say things, because ‘ladies don’t talk like that’ (def one of the worst things I’ve been told).
I still get offended when other people (don’t assume it’s just men) do things for me ‘because they don’t want me to get hurt’ or because ‘girls like me shouldn’t do it’. Can’t help it but see it as questioning my abilities/independence rather than wanting to help.
All I know now, is that girl power is a real thing. The only thing that can lift you up so high you’ll believe you can do anything. And believing you can do something is a very good start for doing great things.
Happy Women’s day to my gals and everyone, who ever had to deal with women – raise them, love them, or feel their amazing power.
